Water Management and Treatment Technologies Laboratory

About Us

TÜBİTAK MAM (Marmara Research Center) Water Management and Treatment Technologies laboratory operates to contribute to the detection, evaluation and solution of environmental problems by measuring conventional parameters, organic and inorganic pollutants in environmental matrices. The laboratory provides precise measurements and assessments to ensure environmental sustainability, public health and industrial compatibility. The main objectives of the laboratory are as follows:

Our Main Objectives

Environmental Monitoring and Assessment

Detection and monitoring of conventional (pH, conductivity, COD, BOD, etc.), inorganic (heavy metals, anions, cations, etc.) and organic micropollutants (drugs, pesticides, endocrine disruptors, etc.) in water, soil, air and other environmental matrices.

Water Quality Monitoring

Assessing the quality of water resources such as drinking water, surface water and groundwater and determining compliance with national/international standards. It also monitors pollution levels in water bodies affected by industrial, agricultural and domestic activities.

Services Offered

Test and Analysis Types

The laboratory performs analyzes that support environmental sustainability with advanced technologies and expert staff.

The laboratory performs various analyses for the detection, measurement and evaluation of inorganic and organic pollutants in the environment. The laboratory performs the following analyzes with advanced devices and techniques:

  • pH, conductivity, turbidity and dissolved oxygen measurements.
  • Determination of total suspended solids (TSS) and total dissolved solids (TDS),
  • Measurement of nitrogen (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium) and phosphorus (orthophosphate, total phosphorus) components,
  • Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurements.
  • Measurement of inorganic environmental pollutants such as Bromide, Sulfate, Chloride, Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Bromate by advanced techniques (ion chromatography, continuous flow analyzer).
  • Measurement of metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic by advanced techniques (ICP-MS, ICP-OES, mercury analysis).
  • Studies on odor, taste, appearance, aquatic microorganism growth, cytotoxicity etc. within the scope of BS 6920
  • Drug Residues (Pharmaceuticals): Detection of substances such as antibiotics, painkillers, hormones in the environment.
  • Pesticide Analyses: Quantification of pesticides (herbicides, insecticides, fungicides) in water, soil and other matrices.
  • Endocrine Disruptors: Analysis of hormone-like chemicals that may affect human and animal health.
  • Organic Pollutants: measurement of toxic organic substances such as industrial pollutants, phenols, phthalates, organochalcone compounds Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins/furans, Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFASs).
  • Acute Ecotoxicological Analyses: Acute toxicological analyses are carried out on waste samples using fish biodata and Daphnia Magna tests.

In particular, it is the first and pioneering laboratory that can analyze 250 specific pollutants and 45 priority pollutants under the Water Framework Directive. In addition, it is the first laboratory in Turkey to be able to carry out a full range of studies to examine the suitability of BS 6920 standard for the effects of non-metallic materials on water quality.

Technical Hardware and Equipment

Its infrastructure includes many high-end analytical and instrumental systems.

This laboratory, its analytical instruments and methods have received a national accreditation certificate from the Turkish Accreditation Agency (TÜRKAK) since July 16, 2010 and an international accreditation certificate from the German Accreditation Council since 2007.

The Micropollutant Laboratory is part of a collaborative network of universities, MoAF, MoEU, MoEnvU, EÜAŞ, TKİ, many ministries, various private organizations and foreign research centers within the scope of the EU Framework Program.

Tests and analyzes are carried out on a wide variety of types and structures of wastes from industrial processes. In addition, content and toxicological analyzes are performed on wastes deliberately or negligently spilled into the environment.
