Karkamish Project

Project Summary

Karkamis Hydroelectric Power Plant Warning Systems Rehabilitation Project (2024 - Ongoing)

Project Summary

Located on the Euphrates River, one of Turkey's most important rivers, the Karkamış Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) was commissioned at full capacity in 2000 and has a total installed capacity of 189 MW. The power plant generates an average of 652 GWh of electricity per year with its 6 units, each with a capacity of 31.5 MW. This project, which aims to renew the excitation (excitation) systems in two units of this power plant, which is of critical importance both in terms of meeting regional energy needs and maintaining grid stability, in accordance with today's technology, aims to increase both production security and sustainability with a local and modern solution.

The rehabilitation work carried out within the scope of the project includes the dismantling of the existing automatic voltage regulator, static type excitation system and excitation breaker and their replacement with fully digital, redundant and modern excitation systems. In this process, the structure is preserved so that the excitation transformers currently used in the power plant remain in the system; only the active components of the excitation system are renewed in accordance with modern norms. The project is a turnkey solution that includes design, manufacturing, factory testing, logistics, field assembly, commissioning, integration with other systems, user training, technical documentation delivery and spare parts supply.

Technical Details

The excitation system to be renewed is designed as static type, fully digital and redundant architecture. Thus, the system's fail-safety is increased, reliability and ease of maintenance are prioritized. The modern microcontroller-based structure provides fast voltage and current regulation, directly contributing to the stable operation of the generator during generation. Technical specifications of the system are given below:

- Rated output (excitation) current: 1100 Adc
- Rated output (excitation) voltage: 300 V
- Maximum output (excitation) voltage: 500 V
- Maximum output (excitation) current (forced excitation mode): 1500 Adc / 20 seconds
- Operating frequency range: 47.5 - 52.5 Hz
- Initial excitation voltage and duration (maximum): 125 Vdc - 10 seconds
- Panel supply voltages: 125 Vdc and 400 Vrms 50 Hz (3 phase, ±10%)

The new system has been developed to be fully compatible with existing protection, control and SCADA systems in the field. All switchboards and control equipment are selected from long-life and maintenance-friendly components.

Project Output

Karkamish Technology

When the project is completed, the excitation systems used in the two units of the Karkamış HEPP will be completely renewed with indigenous resources, thus modernization will be achieved and operational safety and system stability will be significantly increased. Voltage regulation, reactive power control and synchronization operations will be carried out more precisely, faster and more reliably with the new system.

In addition, the project will accelerate the plant's response to maintenance and failure situations, and a structure with higher availability will be established with less human intervention. Thanks to the effective use of domestic engineering power, foreign dependency will be reduced and our country will contribute to the transition to advanced technology in hydroelectric power plants.
