İzmir Province Integrated Coastal Areas Planning Project Stakeholder Workshop was held

In the workshop organized within the scope of the Izmir Province Integrated Coastal Areas Planning Project, representatives of the public, academia and civil society came together to determine the city's coastal strategies.

A Stakeholder Workshop was organized within the scope of the “Izmir Province Integrated Coastal Areas Planning Project” organized by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) and coordinated by the General Directorate of Spatial Planning of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change.

The workshop was attended by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgen Ercan, Vice President of TÜBİTAK MAM Climate and Life Sciences, Yavuz Erdal Kayapınar, Director General of Spatial Planning at the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Deputy Director General Selma Tosun and Dr. Bahar Eser, Head of Spatial Strategies and Environmental Plans Department. In addition, academicians from Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology and Department of Urban and Regional Planning contributed to the organization, and a delegation consisting of representatives from central and local public institutions, non-governmental organizations and the private sector took part in the event.

Within the scope of the workshop, sessions were held on the current status and future goals of the project. Following the presentations made during the program, interactive evaluation processes were carried out to identify stakeholders' views and expectations specific to the study area. In the interviews with representatives of institutions and experts, obstacles encountered in the use of coastal areas, possible conflicts of interest between sectors and solution proposals were discussed in detail. While clarifying how stakeholders can contribute at which stages of the planning process, priority topics that will enable local and central governments to act in coordination were reported.

The data and stakeholder feedback from the workshop formed the basis for the different scenarios and final plans to be developed later in the project.
