Closing Meeting and Workshop of the Project for Investigation of Control and Improvement of Irrigation Return Water for Reuse in the GAP Region

The Closing Meeting and Workshop of the "Project on the Control of Irrigation Return Waters in the Southeastern Anatolia Region (GAP) and Investigation of Their Improvement for Reuse" was held in Şanlıurfa.

 

The Closing Meeting and Workshop of the "Project on Control of Irrigation Return Water in the GAP Region and Investigation of Improvement for Reuse", which started on November 13, 2015, was held on 27-28 December 2018 at Şanlıurfa Nevali Hotel, which is owned by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and implemented by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM).

The aim of the project is to investigate the quality of drainage irrigation waters and the pollutants contained in them in the GAP Region and to develop appropriate methods to improve the quality of drainage waters returning from irrigation and to reuse them in irrigation. In this context, pilot scale studies were carried out in order to evaluate the reuse of returning waters in terms of pollutants in receiving environments, soil and plants, quality improvement and reuse alternatives and water budget were determined and cost-benefit analysis was carried out.

During the project process, valuable experts from Harran and Dicle Universities were consulted. In addition, experts from DSİ GAP 15th Regional Directorate, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and DSİ General Directorate also contributed to the project.

The meeting was attended by Şanlıurfa Deputy Governor Selami Işık, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Director General of Water Management Bilal Dikmen, DSİ 15. Regional Director Ahmet Ersin Gökçe, TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (ÇTÜE) Director Selma Ayaz, experts from the relevant units of the General Directorate of Water Management, DSİ General Directorate employees, academicians from Harran and Dicle Universities, GAP Regional Development Administration Authorities, Provincial Directorate Representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Water and Sewerage Administration General Directorates of Metropolitan Municipalities in the GAP Region and representatives of Provincial Municipalities. 120 people attended the meeting.

The opening speeches of the meeting were made by Selma Ayaz, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE Institute, Bilal Dikmen, General Director of Water Management and Deputy Governor Selami Işık. TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE Institute Director Selma Ayaz talked about the development of YEBA (Domestic Flue Gas Analyzer), organic and inorganic passive samplers in air pollution measurements, cavitation system that can be used especially in the dewatering of sewage sludge and oxygen measurement probe development.

Following the opening speeches, presentations on project activities and results were made. The work carried out in the project and the project results were presented by Arife Özüdoğru, Treatment Group Officer of the General Directorate of Water Management, and the work carried out on irrigation in the GAP Region was presented by Ahmet Ersin Gökçe, DSİ 15th Regional Director.

On the first and second days of the workshop; presentations and evaluations on "Quality of Drainage Waters in GAP Region, Non-Structural Solutions in Irrigation Water Management Legal and Administrative Suggestions, Results of Pilot Scale Study, Evaluation of Groundwater Measurement Results in GAP Region, Harran Plain and GAP Region Water Budget Study, Structural Solutions in Drainage Water Management" were made by the faculty members of Harran and Dicle Universities and the staff of DSİ 15th Regional Directorate.

The workshop was concluded with a closing speech and general evaluation.
