Project Summary

Multilevel Modular Inverter Based Back-to-Back High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) System Development Project (2014 - 2020)

Project Summary

High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems are used in today's electricity transmission systems due to the transmission of high powers over long distances with less loss compared to conventional alternating current electricity transmission systems, no distance limit in electricity transmission with underground / underwater cables, enabling the interconnection of different electricity networks that cannot be connected with alternating current connection, and preventing the interaction of disturbances by acting as a firewall between networks in interconnection.

Within the scope of the project initiated by TÜBİTAK KAMAG with the call for R&D project in order to design and develop the Back-to-Back Static Two-Way Active Power Transmission System that will enable the exchange of electrical energy between our country and neighboring countries (bilateral) with domestic facilities, it is aimed to develop an Active Power Transmission System with a total power of 100MW based on the connection of 4 25MW back-to-back multi-level converter circuits connected in parallel with each other at the highest 36kV voltage level to the national electricity transmission network of at least 132kV with the help of coupling transformers.

In the project, a 9.5MW prototype system was developed as part of the development of a voltage-sourced, modular multi-level inverter-based back-to-back High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system that provides independent reactive power as well as bidirectional active power flow.

Technical Details

The sub-modules of the HVDA prototype in modular multilevel inverter topology are designed to be used at 36kV voltage level with the required number of series connections. In terms of efficiency and cost, half-bridge sub-module topology is preferred and redundancy is provided by the by-pass switch used in the sub-modules.

Project Output

HVDA Technology

The modular multilevel inverter based back-to-back HVDA prototype, which has a power of 9.5 MW, with 7 sub-modules in each arm, at 5.5kV AC input voltage and 10.8kV DC link voltage level, using sub-modules developed and produced in accordance with the technical requirements in the targeted output of the project, has been verified by performing closed cycle power flow tests.
