Köklüce Excitation Project

Project Summary

Köklüce HEPP Warning and Protection Systems Rehabilitation Project (2014-2015)

Project Summary

The rehabilitation project carried out at Köklüce Hydroelectric Power Plant aimed to modernize the existing systems in line with the requirements of the era and increase operational continuity. Within the scope of this project carried out at Köklüce HEPP, many critical components of the two units of the power plant, from the excitation system to the synchronization equipment, were successfully replaced.

Considering the plant's production safety, system stability and ease of maintenance, a comprehensive rehabilitation work was carried out. As a result of these works carried out in Unit 1 and Unit 2, many electrical equipment was renewed and the excitation, protection and synchronization systems of the power plant were modernized. The rehabilitation works have significantly extended the future operational life of Köklüce HEPP and increased its system efficiency.

Technical Details

Within the scope of the project, the following systems and equipment were completely renewed:

- Excitation System and Automatic Voltage Regulator (Unit 1, 2)
- Unit Electrical Protection System (Unit 1, 2)
- Generator Output Switchgear: Disconnector, surge arrester and capacitor equipment (Unit 1, 2)
- Generator Current and Voltage Measurement Transformers: Both output and neutral side (Unit 1, 2)
- Excitation Transformer (Primary) Current Transformers (Unit 1, 2)
- Internal Requirement Transformer (Primary) Current Transformers (Unit 1, 2)
- Excitation Transformers (Unit 1, 2)
- Internal Requirement Transformer (Unit 2)
- Main Power Transformer (Unit 2)
- Generator Neutral Disconnectors and Neutral Resistors (Unit 1, 2)
- Unit Synchronization System (Unit 1, 2)
- Domestic Demand Transformer Primary Disconnectors (Unit 1, 2)

All the systems listed above have been designed and commissioned to be fully compatible with the existing structure and integrated into the modern control infrastructure.

Project Output

Rooted Excitation Technology

This rehabilitation project at Köklüce HEPP has increased the electrical safety level of the plant, enhanced the stability of the power generation process and optimized the maintenance-support processes of the system. Thanks to the upgraded excitation and protection systems, fault detection and response times have been reduced, while new synchronization structures have enabled faster and more secure grid connection. In addition, the renewal of main and internal demand transformers improved energy quality and minimized losses in power transmission.

At the end of the project, Köklüce HEPP was modernized in accordance with an advanced technology and sustainable operation model, and an important step was taken in reducing foreign dependency with domestic engineering know-how.
