Kemerkoy Excitation Project

Project Summary

Generator Warning System Design and Development Project for KEAŞ (2011-2015)

Project Summary

Kemerköy Elektrik Üretim ve Ticaret A. Ş. (KEAŞ) Thermal Power Plant plays an important role in Turkey's energy production with its structure consisting of three synchronous generators of 274 MVA each. In this project, it was aimed to modernize the generator excitation systems of the power plant and in this context, redundant, static and thyristor excitation systems were designed and commissioned. These systems provide direct current to the rotors of the generators, creating a magnetic field and thus realizing electricity generation. Thanks to their modern microcontroller-based structure, the excitation systems provide fast voltage and current regulation and directly contribute to the stable operation of the generators during generation. One of the most remarkable innovations of the project is the water cooling system used to cool the thyristor modules. This system optimizes the thermal management of high power excitation systems, extending component lifetime and reducing maintenance requirements. Furthermore, the water cooling system contributes to the compact design of the excitation boards, resulting in space savings.

Technical Details

The excitation systems developed within the scope of the project are designed in a fully redundant architecture, prioritizing the system's failsafety and ease of maintenance. Thanks to the modern microcontroller-based structure, fast voltage and current regulation is provided, directly contributing to the stable operation of the generators. The water cooling system used to cool the thyristors has provided high efficiency in the thermal management of the excitation systems, a first in Turkey in this field.

Project Output

Kemerkoy Excitation Technology

With this project, the generator excitation systems of KEAŞ Thermal Power Plant were equipped with modern technologies, increasing the safety and efficiency of power generation processes. Thanks to the water cooling system, thermal management of the excitation systems has been improved, maintenance intervals have been extended and system life has been increased. In addition, with the effective use of domestic engineering resources, external dependency has been reduced and Turkey's technological competence in the energy sector has been strengthened.
