"Determination and Classification of Quality Status of Marine and Coastal Waters Project (DeKoS)" The project started on 16 December 2011 and ended on 6 December 2013 with the contract signed between the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and TUBITAK Marmara Research Center. The project aims to create the necessary information and implementation tools to support the implementation of the principle of "ecosystem approach management" for transitional-coastal and coastal-marine waters for the implementation of the Marine Strategy Directive (DSÇD) (2008/56/EC) and the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC).a

The project covers all Turkish seas and coastal waters including the Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Mediterranean Sea and Aegean Sea. The main objectives are to define coastal and transitional waters, to identify coastal water typologies and water management units (water body), to classify coastal waters according to their ecological quality and to identify gaps, to assess the regional "good environmental status" of the seas and to set targets and indicators for this, and to propose an integrated coastal and marine waters monitoring program and implementation structure based on these assessments and targets.

On 19 December 2013, at the Project Closing Workshop, objectives and outputs for SEA and WFD, gap analyses and suggestions for future work topics were presented. The results of the studies on "Macroalgae and Seagrass Studies" evaluated within the scope of EU Directives were shared. Presentations were made on "Commercially Important Marine Products" and "Seabed Integrity" which are Good Environmental Status Descriptors of the WFD. A panel discussion was organized on biodiversity, commercially important marine products, seafloor integrity, and eutrophication, which are Good Environmental Status Descriptors. There was also a presentation on recommendations on the evaluation of the "Institutional Structure" for the implementation of the Integrated Marine Monitoring and Assessment Program.

A total of 52 experts from relevant public institutions/organizations and universities participated in the workshop.
