Evaluating the activities of the TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, which operates in important areas such as clean production, air quality and waste management, Chief Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Baban said that they strengthen resource efficiency in industry. "We instill health in production activities," said Baban.

 Waste management specialist

In the presentation, the projects of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute on important issues such as industry, OIZs and waste management were explained. The Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, which develops projects on important issues such as air quality and wastewater management in OIZs and industrial facilities, also provided comprehensive information on the project supported by TÜBİTAK on animal waste management, especially for Agriculture Based Specialized OIZs. It was pointed out that eco-efficiency assessments, industrial symbiosis, clean production methodologies are used to prevent environmental pollution and help sustainable development.

Academic profile

Ahmet Baban stated that there are 74 permanent employees and 48 project personnel at TÜBİTAK- MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, which conducts studies on clean production, air quality, sea, inland waters, water, wastewater, hazardous wastes and soil, and explained that 6 percent of the employees have bachelor's degrees, 40 percent have master's degrees and 54 percent have doctorates.

Industrial projects

Giving examples of industrial projects of the Institute of Environment and Cleaner Production, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Baban said: "In addition to the projects that determine the resource efficiency potential in industry and develop clean production opportunities in industry, we have carried out various studies on waste and air pollution in enterprises and OIZs. These studies are; Air Quality and Odor Pollution in Gebze OIZ, Air Pollutant Sources, Emission Loads and Air Quality of the Region in Çerkezköy OIZ, Nitrogen Removal by Anaerobic Ammonium Oxidation Process in Sludge Digester Effluents of Ambarlı Advanced Biological and Waste Water Treatment Plant, Investigation of Suitable Methods for the Treatment of Afyon Alkaloids Industry Wastewater, Treatment and Disposal of Wastewater from Health Institutions, Turkish Coal Enterprises Garp Lignites Plant - Underground Water and Well Water Treatment Plant Implementation Project and Zero Emission Building - Integrated Management Project".

Animal waste management

Stating that with this project, they aim to increase the efficiency of the use of animal waste by processing animal waste with the help of appropriate technology in animal waste management projects, Ahmet Baban said that they aim to protect the environment by preserving natural resources. Baban; "We have important goals such as expanding the use of organic fertilizers, ensuring the cycle of solid and liquid waste-stabilization-organic fertilizer-use for fertilizer purposes-feed crops production, increasing competitiveness within the framework of industrial symbiosis, establishing eco-efficiency and training users to ensure sustainability."

 'industrial symbiosis' is the key

TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute Chief Expert Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Baban: In regions where animal husbandry is intensive, animal wastes cause significant environmental pollution and cause the local people to live in unhealthy conditions. As a result of the widespread establishment of integrated animal farms, Agriculture Based Specialized OIZs in our country, the implementation of the technologies envisaged within the scope of the project, and their operation under appropriate conditions, significant developments can be achieved in energy production, reduction of greenhouse gases, pollution of soil surface water and groundwater, and solution of public health problems, along with economic development. The increasing interest in organic products will also increase the demand for products resulting from processes. Utilization of different organic wastes, industrial symbiosis, increased environmental performance, increased competitiveness due to the utilization of wastes as products and significant contribution to economic development are expected.
