Within the scope of the Sustainable Turkish Straits System - Dardanelles Project implemented by TURMEPA with the support of MITSUI & CO., Ltd. Environmental Fund grant and İÇDAŞ A.Ş., the first training was given on August 10 on board the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Vessel anchored in Çanakkale Port.

The first training of the "Sustainable Turkish Straits System - Dardanelles" project, launched by DenizTemiz Derneği/TURMEPA in January 2016, was organized in Çanakkale on the TUBITAK Marmara Research Ship in Çanakkale, which includes awareness raising activities with adults and university students to explain the importance of the Turkish Straits System and to protect the biodiversity in the Dardanelles. 40 students participated in two trainings held on August 10. The children experienced the excitement of exploring a research vessel and raised awareness about the importance of the Dardanelles.

The project, which was developed to draw attention to the fact that the Dardanelles Strait is facing human-induced threats and to raise public awareness on this issue, will continue for 27 months in Çanakkale Center, Lapseki, Eceabat, Gelibolu, Gökçeada and Bozcaada districts.

TUBITAK MARMARA Research Ship was opened to the children of Çanakkale for promotion purposes. During the 1-day event, which also included TURMEPA trainings, the research ship and TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center were introduced to the children and the marine researches being carried out were explained. In this context, the movie prepared for the introduction of the ship was also shown to the participants.

The main objective of the project, which will be carried out in Çanakkale's Central, Lapseki, Eceabat, Gelibolu, Gökçeada and Bozcaada districts, is to draw attention to the fact that the Dardanelles Strait, one of the most important passageways of Turkey and the world, is facing land-based and especially human-induced threats and to raise awareness in the society on this issue. The target audience of the project is university students, fishermen cooperatives, local administrations, senior figures from the private sector, and tourism sector employees. In this context, the project's Education Advisory Board, consisting of academics from Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University Faculty of Educational Sciences and Faculty of Marine Sciences and Technology, has prepared a training kit to develop training concepts in a format that reflects real life as much as possible.

The project, which will be phased as on-site trainings, collective trainings and congresses, aims to ensure that what is learned is internalized. In order to determine the impact of the trainings to be applied to adults, measurement and evaluation tests will be applied to all participants and will be published by TURMEPA at the end of the project.

The education sets cover topics such as enlightening people about the current state of the Çanakkale marine ecosystem, drawing attention to the negative impacts of illegal, improper and excessive fishing on human life, teaching the correct and effective ways to separate waste, and showing the positive effects of a clean and hygienic sea and coastline on the tourism sector. The education cycle in the region will start by first introducing the project to the districts in Çanakkale, creating interest and awareness by displaying visuals. Trainings will be delivered by visiting workplaces and target audience locations.

Within the scope of the project, a blog page will be created, and the project and DenizTemiz brand awareness will be created in cooperation with local media and administrations. The project will also be supported by events and campaigns.
