The 4th National Antarctic Science Expedition of the Turkish team started its work in the White Continent, where it arrived after a long journey. Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank announced that the experts of the General Directorate of Mapping, who were part of the 24-person science team, established Turkey's first fixed GNSS station outside its borders in Antarctica.
Noting that the station was established 73 kilometers from Horseshoe Island, where the temporary Turkish Science Camp is located, Minister Varank said that changes in landforms and glaciers on the continent will be monitored with this station.
WORK HAS BEGUN
The team participating in the 4th National Antarctic Science Expedition, which took place under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic, under the auspices of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and in coordination with the TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, started working on 15 projects previously determined after an exhausting journey of 15 thousand kilometers.
TRANSPORTED BY HELICOPTER AND BOATS
The staff of the General Directorate of Mapping established Turkey's first fixed GNSS station abroad on Dismal Island. The materials brought from Turkey were transported from the ship to the island by helicopter and boats.
WE ARE HAPPY, WE ARE PROUD
Dr. Major Soner Özdemir from the Geodesy Department of the General Directorate of Mapping said that the GNSS station can receive data from global navigation systems such as GPS, GLONASS and GALILEO. Explaining that they will monitor the earth's crustal movements and changes caused by glacial melting with the station, Özdemir said, "We are happy and proud to establish the first fixed GNSS station outside the borders of Turkey."
STARTED RECEIVING DATA
