As a continuation of the mutual meetings held in 2015 to identify areas of cooperation between TÜBİTAK MAM and the Uganda National Science and Technology Board, a delegation consisting of Prof. Dr. Abdullah Karaman, Director of the Institute of Earth and Marine Sciences, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Serdar Özalaybey and Dr. Ümit Avşar visited Uganda between 10-16 January 2016.
The Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) has previously approached the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) for funding for a project to utilize renewable resources in power generation. During this visit, which was aimed at preliminary discussions on a feasibility study for the use of Uganda's geothermal resources in power generation, meetings were held first with UNCST Chair Theresa Sengooba and her delegation, and then with Betty Kasimbazi, undersecretary of the Ministry of Finance, and Prof. Dr. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa, Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Sports. Accompanied by experts from the newly established Geothermal Energy Unit under the Ministry of Energy, the NEBE delegation made a two-day technical visit to geothermal fields in Buranga and Katwe on the East African Rifti (Afar Rifti) and shared its impressions with UNCST officials. The visit ended with the decision to discuss the project details and model in a tripartite meeting to be held probably in March, where the IDB representative will also be present.
