Within the scope of the "Treatment and Disposal of Wastewater from Healthcare Institutions Project" being carried out by TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, a workshop was held on March 8, 2016 in TÜBİTAK TÜSSİDE Gebze / Kocaeli in order to identify and prioritize the biological risk parameters that may be found in hospital wastewater. The workshop was attended by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Health Services, public health, microbiology and infection experts from various hospitals operating in our country.

The workshop started with the opening speech made by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haldun KARAN, Deputy Director of the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute on behalf of TÜBİTAK MAM. Information about the work to be carried out within the scope of the project was conveyed to the participants by Project Coordinator Dr. Selda MURAT HOCAOĞLU from TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, followed by the presentation of Assoc. Prof. Dr. M. Burak AKSU from Marmara University Pendik Training and Research Hospital, Department of Medical Microbiology, which is a pilot health institution in the project. After the opening and presentations, group work was started to determine the negative aspects of the current situation and biological risk parameters in the disposal of wastewater generated during the activities of health institutions. The first phase of the group work consisted of idea generation activities where the negative aspects of the current situation for the disposal of wastewater from health institutions were discussed. Subsequently, the work on the prediction and prioritization of biological risk parameters that may be found in hospital wastewater, risk comparison of hospital wastewater and domestic wastewater in terms of biological parameters, determination of monitoring parameters and development of recommendations was started. Through group work, experts on the subject discussed different aspects of the subject, and biological risk parameters were identified and prioritized.
