The Closing Meeting of the "Ensuring Standardization in Marine Monitoring Project" supported by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and implemented by TÜBİTAK MAM Environmental Clean Production Institute was held on 12 April 2017 in Ankara.
The Closing Meeting of the "Ensuring Standardization in Marine Monitoring Project" supported by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization General Directorate of EIA, Permit and Inspection and implemented by TÜBİTAK MAM Environmental Clean Production Institute was held on 12 April 2017 in Ankara. The meeting was attended by 53 participants representing ministries, universities, municipalities and NGOs.
The Closing Meeting started with the speeches of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haldun Karan, Deputy Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute and Mr. Mustafa Satılmış, Director General of EIA, Permit and Inspection of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Serap Kantarlı, Branch Manager from the General Directorate of EIA, Permit and Inspection of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, shared the project outputs with the participants in her presentation. Ersan Kuzyaka, Project Coordinator from TÜBİTAK MAM, evaluated the capacities of universities, research institutions, public institutions and organizations related to marine monitoring in our country and the projects they have carried out within the scope of the project according to the results of the survey study and shared the strengths and weaknesses of our country regarding the Marine Strategy Framework Directive with the participants. Relationship between marine biodiversity and ecosystem functions: pathway applications for monitoring was presented by Assoc. Prof. Kemal Can Bizsel from Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Marine Science and Technology. The last presentation was given by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çolpan Beken, Project General Coordinator from TÜBİTAK MAM, on the Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy Document.
Training, assessment workshops, monitoring guidelines, marine monitoring strategy document components of the project, which aims to make pollution status assessments in all our seas, to ensure standardization in monitoring to determine the quality status of marine and coastal waters and to establish monitoring strategies, have been completed.
During the project, 3 regional workshops were organized in Izmir, Istanbul, Trabzon and a national workshop was organized in Ankara. Within the scope of the project, 12 monitoring guides have been prepared including Biodiversity Guidelines for the Use of Trawling Management in Alien Species and Marine Solid Waste Studies, Benthos Monitoring Guide, Macroalgae and Seagrass Monitoring Guide, Marine Mammal Monitoring Guide, Plankton Monitoring Guide, Hydrographic Conditions Monitoring Guide, Eutrophication Monitoring Guide, Microbial Pollutants Monitoring Guide, Inorganic Pollutants Monitoring Guide, Organic Pollutants Monitoring Guide, Marine Litter Monitoring Guide and Underwater Noise Monitoring Guide. In addition, Turkey Seas Monitoring and Assessment Document, which will form the basis for the marine monitoring legislation planned to be prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, was prepared.
