In our country, almost 4 thousand licensed sailors explore the world seas with sailboats every year. Our country, which meets the sea on three sides, has hosted many important sailors in its history. We examine one of them in our news: Osman Atasoy, who had previously sailed around the world with his boat "Uzaklar" in 1992, and Sibel Karasu, a professional diver and underwater guide, reached the Antarctic Continent with their 14-meter boat "Uzaklar II", the construction of which was undertaken by the Chamber of Shipping, and inspired many people.
Departing on October 22, 2008 from Marmaris, the duo started sailing in the Atlantic Ocean after crossing the Strait of Gibraltar, and continued their voyage by making stops in the Atlantic to the Canary Islands. Turning back to the open sea, the sailboat reached the coast of Brazil. As the boat started to descend towards Argentina, the final preparations were made to pass Cape Horn, known as the "Everest of the Seven Seas". The duo returned Cape Horn on March 9, 2011, and this time they set course for Antarctica, whose attraction they could not prevent. This voyage, which required meticulous work, serious renovation and equipment, was crowned on January 10, 2012, crowning their expedition and making history as one of the first Turkish boats to reach Antarctica. On March 23, 2012, the sailors planted the Turkish flag on the ice sheet and returned to the Port of Ushuaia in the southernmost tip of Argentina, from where they started their Antarctic voyage. They ended their 22,000-mile round-the-world voyage by returning to Turkey on December 10, 2012.
Atasoy and Karasu documented the footage they took during their Antarctica trip in 2012. You can access this documentary, which will be enjoyed by young people who want to share this adventure and travel the world and who have a sense of curiosity, from the link below:
