The works within the scope of the Project to Open the H.M.S. Majestic Shipwreck to Diving Tourism, signed between TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Environment and Clean Production Institute (ÇTÜE) and Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency (ÇATAB) on October 01, 2019, have come to an end.
Supported by the South Marmara Development Agency (GMKA) and Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency (ÇATAB), TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE, under the supervision of ÇATAB and Istanbul University (IU), contributes to the inventory, conservation and functionalization of the ships sunk in the Çanakkale War.
The project aims to determine the current underwater locations of all the ships sunk in the First World War in our defined study area and to create a shipwreck inventory.
Within the scope of the project, which is planned to open the wrecks to diving tourism, a number of studies were carried out specifically for the H.M.S. Majestic shipwreck. The "Diver Monitoring System" TÜBİTAK MAM, which will be put into service after the underwater documentation of the shipwreck is completed and opened to tourism and is currently in the production phase, was designed by ÇTÜE. With this system, divers diving on the H.M.S. Majestic ship will be monitored in near real time by the Çanakkale Wars Gallipoli Historical Site Presidency (ÇATAB) in a computerized environment. In addition, an underwater camera that will be able to transmit live images from the wreck site will also be placed in the wreck site.
Prof. Dr. Ufuk Kocabaş, Dr. Evren Türkmenoğlu and their team from Istanbul University Faculty of Letters, Department of Conservation and Restoration of Movable Cultural Assets continue archaeological research on the H.M.S. Majestic and all the shipwrecks identified.
With the completion of the project, for the first time, a ship (H.M.S. Majestic) sunk in the Çanakkale War will be opened to divers underwater.
