The Inaugural Meeting of the "Determination of Cleaner Production Opportunities and Applicability in Industry (SANTEM)" project signed between the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization General Directorate of Environmental Management and TUBITAK-Marmara Research Center on 11.03.2016 was held on April 22, 2016 at Wyndam Hotel in Ankara.
Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ, Deputy General Manager from the General Directorate of Environmental Management, stated in his speech that clean production has an important place in preventing air, water and soil pollution and taking protective measures. In his speech, Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ emphasized that clean production has an important place in preventing air, water and soil pollution and taking protective measures, that the Ministry took the first concrete step for the textile sector in 2011, issued the "Communiqué on Integrated Pollution Prevention in the Textile Sector" and supported the SANTEM project in order to disseminate clean production practices to other sectors. Mr. Mr. DÖKMECİ stated that clean production practices not only prevent pollution before it occurs at the source, but also reduce product costs, and for this reason, projects such as SANTEM, where sector-specific clean production opportunities are evaluated, should be continued.
Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, introduced the institute and explained the projects carried out at the institute and the activities on cleaner production. Ceren TOSUN, the project coordinator, stated in her speech that the project aims to examine the current situation of the iron-steel and yeast sectors, sectoral needs, clean production opportunities, incentive mechanisms and legal regulations, and to evaluate the applicability of the various possibilities determined in the conditions of our country.
In addition, Prof. Dr. Mehmet KİTİŞ, who took part in the project as a consultant, evaluated how clean production is applied in enterprises, clean production studies and results in Turkey, and the importance of the project for the yeast and iron and steel sector was mentioned. Within the scope of the project, R&D and Environment Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa TÜRKER from PAKMAYA Company, where pilot plant studies will be carried out for the yeast sector, and Mr. Ahmet TAŞKIN, Deputy Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute. Mr. Ahmet TAŞKIN, Deputy Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute, made presentations on the iron and steel sector.
At the panel organized at the end of the Opening Meeting, the TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute project team and Ministry officials answered the questions of the participants.
Representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Turkish Standards Institute, as well as representatives of sector unions/associations, academicians, representatives of various institutions and organizations, and representatives of the iron and steel and yeast sectors participated in the Opening Meeting.
