The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) conducts scientific research in our seas with the Marmara Research Ship, supports scientific projects related to the seas and oceans, creates sea-ocean awareness in our youth with TEKNOFEST competitions, and regularly conducts scientific studies in the Southern Ocean, the coldest ocean in the world, and the Arctic Ocean, the shallowest ocean in the world, with polar research. In addition to its many sea-ocean themed activities, TÜBİTAK plays an active role in the "Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography Services Planning and Coordination Board (SHO)", which coordinates the marine activities of our country. The United Nations (UN) Decade of Oceans aims to promote scientific studies for the protection and sustainable use of oceans, improve marine ecosystems and raise awareness about the oceans between 2021 and 2030. In this direction, TUBITAK is organizing the Ocean Decade Painting Contest for the first time in order to raise our young generation in our country, which is surrounded by seas on three sides, with sea-ocean awareness.
The aim of the competition is to enable young people to illustrate their thoughts about the oceans through visual arts, to approach the ocean and marine ecosystems from a different perspective, to develop a sense of individual responsibility towards the environment, to develop the ability to express themselves freely through art and to broaden their perspective on scientific research. Thus, it is aimed to create a wide awareness in the field of ocean sciences in our country. In addition, it is aimed to create a generation that imagines the work of our scientists who conduct scientific research in the oceans, the ecosystem of the oceans, creates works that combine science and art at a young age and pursues their scientific curiosity in the future.
