The 2018 action topic of World Seas and Oceans Day, which was declared by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Ocean Commission (IOC) on June 8, was determined as "Preventing plastic pollution and developing solutions for healthy oceans and seas".
DzKK representing our country at the IOC Department of Navigation Hydrography and Oceanography Among the decisions of the 2018 meeting of the SHOH Planning and Coordination Board, which convenes annually under the coordination of the SHOH Plan and Coordination Board and consists of representatives of the institutions that conduct marine research in our country and are responsible for the management of our marine areas, it was recommended to raise awareness for "June 8" and to organize information and activities related to this year's theme. In this context, it was recommended that the digital environment where activities are published on a global scale http://www.worldoceansday.org to raise awareness and contribute to the solution.
Studies in our country are being carried out by the TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute and different universities (supported by TÜBİTAK and EU-funded projects) within the framework of the Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Program of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization to determine the levels and impacts. It is necessary to increase the studies especially in the direction of determining the impacts, to disseminate awareness raising and best practice activities, to carry out studies to develop the necessary treatment technologies and to switch to alternative products instead of single-use plastic products as a start.
