GEDİZ BASIN RIVER BASIN MANAGEMENT PLAN PREPARATION PROJECT COMPLETED

A "Project Closing Meeting" was held on September 30, 2019 at Manisa Büyük Saruhan Hotel, hosted by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and TUBITAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) in order to inform stakeholders about the work carried out within the scope of the "Gediz Basin River Basin Management Plan Preparation Project", to transfer the experience and technical know-how gained in the project and to raise awareness on inter-institutional cooperation.

Regional Directorates of the General Directorate of Highways, Provincial Health Directorates, İlbank central and provincial organizations, TÜİK Regional Directorate, Organized Industrial Zones, provincial and district municipalities, Water and Sewerage Administrations, Irrigation Cooperatives, Universities and NGOs.

The aim of the project was to prepare a River Basin Management Plan for the Gediz Basin for the protection and planning of surface waters and groundwater, including coastal waters, excluding the seas in the Gediz Basin with a holistic approach. The project was carried out between July 2016 and December 2018.

Opening speeches were made by Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute and Bilal DİKMEN, General Manager of Water Management. Subsequently, TÜBİTAK MAM Expert Researcher Dr. Mehmet DİLAVER provided information on the Project Purpose and Scope, Basin Characterization, Identification of Hot Spots in terms of Quality and Quantity Management, Monitoring Studies, Determination of Environmental Targets, Preparation of Measures Program, Modeling Studies, Costs of Measures and Exemptions.

The meeting ended with a discussion and evaluation session where the participants' questions about the project were answered and mutual contributions to future work on implementation were discussed.
