The Closing Meeting of the SANTEM project was held in Ankara on May 17, 2017.
The Closing Meeting of the "Determination of Cleaner Production Opportunities and Applicability in Industry (SANTEM)" project signed between the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization General Directorate of Environmental Management and TUBITAK-Marmara Research Center on 11.03.2016 was held on May 17, 2017 at Holiday Inn Hotel in Ankara. Within the scope of the project, the current situation, sectoral needs, clean production possibilities, incentive mechanisms and legal regulations of the iron-steel and yeast sectors were examined and it was aimed to evaluate the applicability of various possibilities determined under the conditions of our country.
In his opening speech, Mr. Recep AKDENİZ, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Environmental Management on behalf of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, emphasized that clean production is an approach that will enable industrialists to produce in world norms and increase their competitiveness in the international arena, as well as aiming to use less water, energy, chemicals and raw materials and reduce pollution during industrial production. It was stated that the cleaner production approach should be adopted by the Turkish Industry and implemented in consultation in order to ensure environmental and economic gains by using resources in the most efficient way on the way to provide a highly competitive industry, and in this framework, the Ministry has prepared guidelines to assist the iron-steel and yeast sectors in cleaner production issues with the SANTEM project financed by the Ministry.
Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, stated that due to the importance of the enactment of sectoral legal regulations that will facilitate the dissemination of clean production studies in our country and the effective fulfillment of the provisions in the existing legal regulations and will play an important role in achieving the targets, it is important to continue this work carried out for the yeast and iron and steel sectors in other priority sectors. He also emphasized that all stakeholders have serious responsibilities in establishing a national platform for the utilization of slag, which is one of the biggest problems of the iron and steel sector, and in implementing R&D studies for the reuse and recovery of slag by expanding them throughout the country.
Following the opening speeches, the Cleaner Production Promotional Film prepared within the scope of the project was screened and then Ceren TOSUN, Project Coordinator, made a presentation on the project activities and the outputs obtained. Following the program, presentations were made by Dr. Emrah ÖZTÜRK from Süleyman Demirel University on clean production audits and BAT determination studies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa TÜRKER, R&D and Environment Director from Pak Gıda Üretim ve Pazarlama A.Ş., and Ahmet TAŞKIN, General Manager of Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation, on clean production practices in yeast and iron and steel sectors.
The Closing Meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, General Directorate of Highways, Turkish Standards Institute, as well as sectoral associations, academicians, representatives of various institutions and organizations, and representatives of the iron and steel and yeast sectors.
