A protocol was signed between the TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute (KARE) and the General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) for the development of cooperation to monitor atmospheric parameters in the Antarctic continent, to study meteorological cycles and to investigate past climate data.
At the protocol signing ceremony held with the participation of TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, Director General of Meteorology Volkan Mutlu Coşkun and TÜBİTAK Vice President and TÜBİTAK MAM President Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, Prof. Dr. Mandal expressed his satisfaction with the institutionalization of the cooperation with MGM on the polar axis. Emphasizing that MGM's facilities are used in receiving meteorological data from the poles, Mandal said, "Climate change and environmental problems are among the complex, dynamic and variable topics of today. The impact of climate change affects different areas such as agriculture, food and migration. We see MGM as a strategic stakeholder in climate-related processes." Emphasizing that the observation of the meteorological parameters of the Antarctic continent is very important for understanding climate change, Mandal stated that this protocol is very important for the evaluation of data and increasing future cooperation.
Volkan Mutlu Coşkun, Director General of Meteorology, emphasized that an Automatic Meteorological Observation Station was established in Antarctica with the contributions of MGM, and stated that MGM personnel participated in the National Antarctic Science Expeditions, including the last one. Stating that TÜBİTAK MAM KARE has made a name for itself with its successful work in the field of the Poles, Coşkun said that the two organizations will carry out successful works together.
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, Vice President of TÜBİTAK and President of TÜBİTAK MAM, said: "We want to strengthen our cooperation with TÜBİTAK in the field of climate and sustainability. I believe that we will diversify this cooperation with our projects in the field of meteorology."
At the end of the protocol ceremony, TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal presented Coşkun with a model of the TÜRKSAT 6A communication satellite. Coşkun also presented Prof. Dr. Mandal with his book titled "Meteorology and Sectoral Reflections".
