The System Training and Evaluation Workshop of the "Stream Forecasting and Basin Optimization Model," short name ATHOM project, which was carried out for the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) within TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM), was held on September 11, 2024 in Ankara.
The workshop was attended by a large number of people, including the staff of the General Directorate of DSİ and regional directorates and representatives of public and private institutions.
In the workshop organized for this project, which aims to create significant added value for our country in the management and optimum use of water, the details of the system were shared with the participants by the project team, and then a very productive cooperation and evaluation environment was created for the contribution of all stakeholders to the system.
The effective and efficient use of water, which has recently emerged with the impact of climate change, has become very critical for our country. For this purpose, flow forecasting and basin optimization studies carried out in cooperation with DSİ and TÜBİTAK enable us to manage our country's water resources more efficiently and sustainably by using the power of science and technology in water management. Thanks to this cooperation, significant progress has been made in critical issues such as fair sharing of water, reducing flood risks and ensuring water security during dry periods. The system developed includes highly accurate forecasting and optimization systems based on artificial intelligence and data analysis, fed by meteorological data, based on modern scientific modeling.
It is expected that the collaborative environment obtained within the scope of the workshop will make significant contributions to the targeted efforts to expand the ATHOM system to all river basins in Turkey and make it a national water flow forecasting and basin management system for Turkey.
