TÜBİTAK MAM and General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) signed a contract for the Streamflow Forecasting and Basin Optimization Model Project, shortly known as ATHOM Project Introduction Meeting.

The introductory meeting of the ATHOM project, shortly known as the Streamflow Forecasting and Basin Optimization Model Project, signed between TÜBİTAK MAM and the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, was held on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works.

The opening meeting was attended by Mr. Murat ACU, Deputy Director General of DSI, Assoc. Murat ACU, TÜBİTAK MAM President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahadır TUNABOYLU, DSİ Deputy General Manager Mr. Ergün ÜZÜCEK, DSİ Assistant General Manager Mr. Mr. Ergün ÜZÜCEK, Deputy General Manager of DSİ, Mr. Mr. Mustafa UZUN, TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Abdülkadir BALIKÇI, ATHOM Project Team, EÜAŞ, YEGM and MGM.

At the meeting, the Project Manager Dr. Serkan BUHAN made a presentation on the necessity, purpose, work plan, outputs and achievements of the country as a result of the ATHOM Project. Afterwards, Mr. Murat ACU, Deputy General Director of DSİ and Mr. Murat ACU and TÜBİTAK MAM President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahadır TUNABOYLU made speeches. During the meeting, TÜBİTAK MAM President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bahadır TUNABOYLU presented the project plaque made on behalf of the project promotion meeting to Mr. Murat ACU, Deputy General Director of DSİ. The meeting ended with the presentation of the project plaque made on behalf of the project promotion meeting to Mr. Murat ACU and the distribution of project IDs to the project team.

Flow Forecasting and Basin Optimization Model Project Information Note:

Türkiye elektrik üretiminin yaklaşık %25’i hidrolik kaynaklardan elde edilmektedir. Bu bağlamda, hidrolik kaynaklara yönelik su akımı tahminlerinin doğru yapılması ve kaskat hidroelektrik enerji üretim santrallerinin verimli şekilde işletilmesi son derece önemlidir.

As a result of inaccurate estimation of the water to be delivered to the basins and inability to operate the power plants in an optimum manner due to various reasons, the water is disposed of without receiving energy or electricity is generated with imported resources despite the availability of water, leading to significant financial losses. In addition, dams are strained due to instantaneous floods and floods occur as a result of the forced opening of dam gates.

Through the ATHOM project to be carried out between the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works and TUBITAK Marmara Research Center, it is aimed to develop a model that will enable the prediction of the flow to single and consecutive water structures and, accordingly, the preparation of water budgets of storage facilities and their operation on a daily, monthly and annual basis.

Thus, it will be ensured that water resources for irrigation and drinking water are controlled in an optimum way and water is not wasted, dams are operated in a way to maximize the production of electricity from hydraulic sources, and the risks that may occur during the flood season can be predicted thanks to the automatic system to be developed.
