"Workshop on Priority Substances, Specific Pollutants and Legislative Harmonization" was held in Ankara on 03-04 December 2015 in partnership with the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs (MoFWA) General Directorate of Water Management and TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (ÇTÜE).
The workshop evaluated the work carried out to identify hazardous substances in surface water resources (seas, lakes and rivers) caused by pollution and to determine the limit values and environmental quality standards (EQS) that should not be exceeded in order to prevent them from having a negative impact on human and environmental health.
The Workshop started with the opening speeches of Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM METU, Prof. Dr. Cumali KINACI, Director General of Water Management of OSİB and Prof. Dr. Lütfi AKCA, Undersecretary of OSİB and continued with presentations by Dr. Yakup KARAASLAN, Deputy Director General of Water Management, Prof. Dr. Ülkü YETİŞ, Faculty Member of METU Department of Environmental Engineering, experts from OSİB, TÜBİTAK MAM and Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.
On the second day of the workshop, ten working groups exchanged views on the revision of the regulations on hazardous substances polluting surface water resources and evaluated the possible problems that may occur during the implementation of the regulation in advance. With the revision of the Regulation, important steps will be taken to protect and improve water quality in surface water resources and to protect human health and the ecosystem, as well as to take an important step towards harmonization with the European Union acquis.
Within the scope of the workshop, "Determination of Hazardous Substances in Coastal and Transitional Waters of Our Country and Ecological Coastal Dynamics (KIYITEMA) Project" and "Hazardous Substances from Agricultural Activities, Pesticides, Investigation (BİKOP) Project", and as an important output of these projects, the "Project on the Application of the Total Maximum Daily Load (GMTY) Approach in the Gediz Basin", which was initiated in June 2015 at TÜBİTAK MAM MTUE, was also presented.
