Within the scope of the project "ZERO BRINE - Re-designing the value and supply chain of water and minerals: a circular economy approach for the recovery of resources from saline impaired effluent (brine) generated by process industries" project, a technical visit to the Pilot Plant for Wastewater Recovery from coal mines established by Silesian University of Technology (SUT) in Gliwice, Poland was held on October 8, 2019 with the participation of TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE researchers. ZERO BRINE project researchers Dr. Selda Murat Hocaoğlu, Recep Partal and İrfan Baştürk participated in the event on behalf of ÇTÜE.

The ZERO BRINE project addresses the recovery of water, salts and valuable substances from waste/wastewater generated by industries and their reuse in industries with a circular economy approach. Within the scope of the project, pilot plants will be established and operated in the Netherlands (water supply plant), Poland (coal mine), Spain (silica industry) and Turkey by TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE (textile industry/ Zorlu Tekstil). The aim of the event was to visit the pilot plants on site, to examine new technologies and applications and to obtain information. In this context, the project team, with the participation of academics, industry experts and politicians, visited the pilot plant in Poland and received information about the treatment technologies, recovered water, energy and minerals used in the pilot plant.

After the event, presentations were made at SUT by project manager J.R. Moll, Prof. Dr. Marian Turek, who designed the pilot plant, and project scientific coordinator Prof. Dr. Ir. Luuk Rietveld, the scientific coordinator of the project. Afterwards, the Brine Excellence Center established within the scope of the project was visited and the different technologies tested were examined at laboratory and pilot scale. Next year, a similar event will be organized by TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE in Turkey, where the project partners will visit the pilot plant for salt recovery from textile wastewater.
