Turkey will be successful in the global race for industrial property

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that the number of domestic patent applications increased by 13 percent in 2015 compared to the previous year and by 23 percent in the first 3 months of 2016 and said, "As a country, we started the global race in the field of industrial property late, as in many other fields. We continue this race with many disadvantages compared to the countries we compete with, but we will succeed."

Erdoğan attended the 5th Turkish Patent Awards Ceremony organized by the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology and the Turkish Patent Institute at the JW Marriot Hotel. Starting his speech by congratulating the representatives of the companies and institutions that were deemed worthy of the award, Erdoğan said, "On behalf of myself and my nation, I would like to commemorate with gratitude everyone who comes up with new ideas for our country and nation, and produces solutions to problems. I especially congratulate our institutions, engineers and designers whose awards we will present."

Stating that in 2015, Turkey increased the number of domestic patent applications by 13 percent compared to the previous year with more than 5,500 applications, Erdoğan said: "In January, February and March 2016, the number of domestic patent applications increased by 23 percent. In an environment where other countries consider increases of 1 or 2 percent or even small decreases to be sufficient, this success we have achieved as Turkey makes us hopeful, but never satisfied. As a country, we started the global race in the field of industrial property late, as is the case in many other fields. We continue this race with many disadvantages compared to the countries we compete with, but we will succeed. With more than 40 thousand design applications in 2015, Turkey ranks second in Europe and fourth in the world in terms of the countries with the highest number of design applications."

Turkey is the country with the highest number of patent applications in Europe

Erdoğan said that Turkey has been the country with the highest number of trademark applications in Europe since 2011. Explaining that the same success continued with 110 thousand trademark applications last year, Erdoğan continued his words as follows: "These data clearly reveal the desire and entrepreneurial spirit of Turkish people to create their own brands. No power can stand in front of this determination. As long as we pave the way and give our support. Just by looking at the industrial property data, you can see a Turkey that does not fit in its container. The whole world now sees the fact that Turkey is growing, developing and taking firm steps forward. Frankly, I think that the problems we have been experiencing especially in the last 3 years are not independent from this situation. I underline this especially, if there are some games being played on our country, you should know that behind these games is this leap. Whoever says that the Gezi events, the December 17-25 coup attempt, the recent terrorist acts and even the developments in our region have nothing to do with this situation, I doubt his comprehension. But this fact must also be seen: Turkey is no longer the old Turkey. The Turkey that was knocked down every time it was tripped, that was put into crises with small manipulations, whose stability was hanging by a thread, is no more. We are walking with determination on the road to a new Turkey. God willing, we will definitely, definitely reach our 2023 targets. No one should have any doubt about this."

President Erdoğan stated that everyone who supported them in this struggle would take their rightful place in the hearts of the nation.

Stating that Turkey cannot be satisfied with small achievements, Erdoğan said: "Our goals are very big. We will not consider ourselves truly successful until Turkey becomes one of the world's top 10 economies and we see those days. We will not rest until our country's exports reach 500 billion dollars. A Turkey that does not produce its own airplanes, automobiles, defense industry products, high-tech production and does not own its own software cannot be the new Turkey."

Underlining that the issue of industrial property is closely related to the goal of a new Turkey, Erdoğan noted that everyone has great duties and responsibilities in this regard.

President Erdoğan emphasized that one of the issues of critical importance for the country's industrial property system is the legal infrastructure and that he was very pleased that the Draft Industrial Property Law, which is an important step in this regard, was recently submitted to the Turkish Grand National Assembly.
