PROJECT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF TURKEY'S MARINE ENVIRONMENT STRATEGY MEASURES WORKSHOP

The "Measures Program Workshop" of the Project on Establishing the Marine Environment Strategy of Turkey, which is supported by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey and carried out by our Agency, was held at TÜBİTAK Presidency/Ankara Mustafa İNAN Conference Hall between 23-25 October 2019.

The meeting was attended by 116 participants from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and its Provincial Directorates, TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (ÇTÜE), Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Industry and Technology, Naval Forces Command, Metropolitan Municipalities of coastal provinces and Universities.

The Safeguards Workshop started with the speeches of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haldun KARAN, Deputy Director of MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute and Ahmet VARIR, Head of Marine and Coastal Management Department, General Directorate of Environmental Management, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. In these speeches, the importance of the Project, its purpose and scope, as well as the importance of stakeholder institutions and organizations to contribute within their duties and responsibilities in order to ensure that it can be realized as planned were underlined.

After the opening speeches, the Project Coordinator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çolpan POLAT BEKEN, Project Coordinator, made a presentation on the introduction of the project and the activities carried out and planned to be carried out so far. Subsequently, Dr. Gülsen AVAZ, Project Manager, made a presentation on the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and the preparation of the Program of Measures under the Project.

These presentations were followed by presentations by experts from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, General Directorate of Environmental Management, General Directorate of Environmental Monitoring and Supervision, General Directorate of Spatial Planning, General Directorate of Protection of Natural Assets, on the work carried out by their institutions on the project.

The afternoon session continued with presentations by relevant participants from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies, Ministry of Industry and Technology, General Directorate of Industry and Productivity and Coast Guard Command. Afterwards, a question and answer session was held with the participants to discuss the issues related to the project.

The 2nd day of the workshop started with a presentation by Ms. Aslı Süha GÜNAY on the workshop methodology. After the presentation, the participants were divided into 3 different technical working groups according to their fields. These groups were identified as Eutrophication, Pollutants and Marine Litter Working Group, Biodiversity, Alien Species, Fisheries, Food Chain and Seafloor Integrity Working Group and Hydrographic Changes, Noise and Energy Working Group. Afterwards, the Technical Working Groups worked with the group leaders in different halls to identify measures related to their respective topics.

The last day of the workshop started with Emre TOKCAER's presentation on Socio-economic Analysis Studies - Measures Program -Marinturk Experience. Following the presentation, technical working group leaders made presentations of the work done in their working groups and received contributions and evaluations through a question and answer session.
