Turkey has been organizing regular National Antarctic Science Expeditions to the Antarctic Continent since 2017. In line with raising awareness about the poles as one of the goals of the TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute, a nationwide Painting Contest with the theme "Science at the Poles in the 100th year of our Republic" is organized, with an award ceremony planned to be held on Antarctica Day.
While the Antarctic Continent, which is kilometers away from our country, has the coldest and harshest conditions in the world, is not suitable for human life and hosts more than half of our planet's fresh water and hosts huge glaciers, is located at our south pole; When we look at the opposite of our world, that is, at the north pole, we see the Arctic Region, which has the coldest ocean in the world, where indigenous peoples live and is one of the areas most affected by climate change today. With the competition, it is aimed for our young people to paint their thoughts about both polar regions by using visual arts, inspiration and their sense of curiosity, and to create widespread awareness in our country in the field of polar sciences with these works. Thus, it is aimed to create a generation that combines art and science at a young age by imagining the work of our scientists who conduct scientific research by going to the farthest points in the world from our country and the nature, environment and animal life there, and to create a generation that follows their scientific curiosity in the future.
