INTEGRATED MARINE POLLUTION MONITORING PROGRAM (DEN-İZ) WORKSHOP ORGANIZED UNDER THE COORDINATION OF TUBU̇TAK MARMARA RESEARCH CENTER (MAM)

Between 27-28 November 2018, "Black Sea Regional Monitoring and Evaluation Workshop", which is being carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and coordinated by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM), was held at Karadeniz Technical University, Prof. Dr. Osman Turan Cultural Center.

The aim of the Workshop is to share the Black Sea Monitoring Study Results and Marine Pressures with the Black Sea Beneficiaries and Stakeholders within the scope of "Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Program (DEN-IZ)" for the period 2017-2019.

The workshop started with opening and introductory speeches by Haldun Karan, Deputy Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (ÇTÜE), Prof. Dr. Ahmet Cemal Dinçer, Director of Karadeniz Technical University Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology, and Serap Kantarlı, Branch Manager of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.

On the first day of the Workshop, which was held with the participation of 90 experts from different public institutions, organizations, organizations and universities, long-term permanent effects of anthropogenic eutrophication on the Black Sea ecosystem, Black Sea Monitoring Study Results and Marine Pressures, Pollutant Levels in Sediment and Biota, Radioactivity Levels, Current Eutrophication Status, Black Sea Biodiversity, Importance and Historical Changes, EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive and Marin Turk Project outputs were compared. In addition, comparisons were made with the Black Sea Regional Monitoring Program (BSIMAP) and a joint evaluation was made. Presentations were made by experts on international and national projects.

On the second day of the Workshop, a Panel on Marine Litter in the Black Sea was organized on the sources, status and impacts of marine litter, measures and recommendations. The need to develop technology for the removal and disposal of microplastics at source, and to eliminate the gaps in legal processes and legislation were discussed. In addition, at the end of the workshop, information about the work carried out by other public institutions was shared.

At the workshop, the hydrodynamic and ecosystem characteristics, pressures and pollution status of the Black Sea were discussed. As a result of this discussion panel, the need for a multi-faceted approach to the protection of the Black Sea and the need to create a "Road Map for the Black Sea" under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization were put forward.
