Marine Dredging Practices and Environmental Management of Dredged Material

The project "Marine Dredging Practices and Environmental Management of Dredging Material (DİPTAR)" supported by KAMAG 1007 Program started on October 01, 2013. The Ministry of Environment and Urbanization is the client organization and the partners of the project are METU Institute of Marine Sciences and Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences and Management. The project aims to develop an approach to ensure the management of dredging and disposal activities carried out in our country in line with the principles of sustainable use without harming the ecosystem and human health, taking into account international legislation and practices. This approach, which will be supported by scientific methods, will be tested in marine environments with different characteristics and it is aimed to complete the deficiencies of the "draft regulation" prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization.

The Inaugural Workshop of the Project was held on November 7, 2013 at TÜBİTAK MAM Central Administrative Building Conference Hall. A total of 45 experts from relevant public institutions/organizations and universities attended the meeting.

Following the opening speeches of Mr. Murat Turan, Head of Marine and Coastal Management Department, General Directorate of Environmental Management, Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Republic of Turkey. Following the opening speeches of Mr. Murat Turan and Mr. Ertan Durmuşoğlu, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, Ms. Özlem Özer, who works as an Expert at the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization of the Republic of Turkey, presented the activities carried out in her presentation titled "Ministry Practices on Sea Dredging". Following the DİPTAR Project Introduction presentation by Dr. Leyla G. Tolun, DİPTAR Project Coordinator, a project panel was held with the experts working in the project implementing organizations and the Ministry, which is the client of the project.

A total of 45 experts from relevant public institutions/organizations and universities participated in the workshop.
