On 03.02.2017, the signing ceremony of the "License Agreement for the Production and Sales Rights of Empregne Activated Carbon for CBRN Filters" to be executed by TÜBİTAK MAM together with MAKEL Teknoloji A.Ş. was held at MAM facilities. TÜBİTAK MAM Vice President Dr. Orkun HASEKİOĞLU, Vice Presidents Dr. İbrahim BEKAR, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat MAKARACI, Acting Director of the Institute of Materials Prof. Dr. Metin USTA, Deputy Director Dr. Salih DABAK, Unit Manager Seçil Selçuk, Lead Researcher Assoc. Dr. Emel Musluoğlu, General Manager of MAKEL Teknoloji A.Ş. Emre TUKSAL and company officials attended the signing ceremony.

In the project carried out by Dr. Elif TAHTASAKAL and her colleagues at the TÜBİTAK MAM Materials Institute for the first time in 2002 in line with the needs of the Naval Forces Command, empregne activated carbon was developed within the scope of the production of CBRN protective filters for frigates with domestic facilities, and successfully passed all the tests in the Technical Specifications and was used in the filters. Domestic raw materials were used in the production of Empregne activated carbon, and the developed product has a harder structure than its counterparts and has a low dusting rate.
In the following years, 60 CBRN filters were produced and delivered within the scope of the needs of the Turkish Naval Forces Command.

In 2011, due to the earthquake in Tokyo, filters were produced and delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to protect the personnel of the Turkish Embassy in Tokyo against threats that could be released from the nuclear reactor, and were sent to Tokyo within 24 hours.
With the License Agreement signed after obtaining the necessary permissions from the Naval Forces Command for the production of impregnated activated carbon used in filters that provide protection against all kinds of CBRN threats, which is of strategic importance for Turkey and whose purchase is subject to special permits, it is now possible to produce this material domestically with national facilities according to international standards. Thus, dependence on foreign countries for CBRN protection will be eliminated.
