THE OPENING MEETING OF THE GÜRHEP PROJECT WAS HELD

The meeting was attended by Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ, Deputy Director General for Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Ms. Nazan ÖZYÜREK, Head of Air Management Department and relevant branch personnel; Dr. Osman OKUR, Vice President of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center, Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of Environment and Clean Production Institute, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nesimi ÖZKURT, other project staff and 66 representatives from 20 provincial municipalities (Ağrı, Aksaray, Düzce, Çanakkale, Erzincan, Giresun, Isparta, Kars, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, Kırklareli, Kırşehir, Nevşehir, Niğde, Osmaniye, Şırnak, Siirt, Yalova, Yozgat, Zonguldak) and Provincial Directorates of Environment and Urbanization.

With the project contract signed between TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center and the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization on February 15, 2021, studies to develop noise model data sets and calculate noise levels of 20 provinces within the scope of the principles and criteria specified in the regulation and the relevant EU directive were initiated. Strategic noise maps will be prepared to determine the existing noise levels in the residential areas within the scope of the study and to determine the number of people, residences, schools and hospitals exposed to noise.

In the opening speech of the project, Mr. Dr. Osman OKUR, Vice President of the Center, talked about the strategic noise maps, noise action plans and noise barrier systems development projects carried out by the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute of TÜBİTAK MAM, which is active in producing scientific and technological solutions to environmental problems. He stated that with the completion of this project, the strategic noise maps of 59 provinces in our country will be prepared by our Institution.

In his opening speech, Mr. Sebahattin DÖKMECİ, Deputy Director General for Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, gave information about the environmental noise projects carried out in previous years with the support and cooperation of the Ministry and TÜBİTAK. He emphasized the importance of noise control in creating quieter and livable cities.

Nuray HÜSMEN, Environmental Noise and Vibration Management Branch Manager of the General Directorate of Environmental Management, made a presentation on all the studies carried out by other institutions in our country with the support of the Ministry on noise legislation and environmental noise management. Project Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nesimi ÖZKURT made a presentation to the participants on the importance of the project, work plan, project outputs, strategic noise mapping and noise control.

In her closing speech, Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of the Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, expressed her thanks to all parties who contributed to the project, especially the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization officials, and stated that the project team working within the Institute will continue to take pioneering steps in our country for the purpose of reducing noise in cities.

Nazan ÖZYÜREK, Head of Air Management Department, stated that with this project for the preparation of strategic noise maps of 20 provinces, all studies in 66 provinces in our country, which are responsible for preparing maps, will be completed and wished the project to be beneficial for our country.
