On April 22, 2014, the 1st project monitoring meeting was hosted by the TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute with the participation of project partners and project monitoring referees. During the meeting, the KAMAG officer in charge was present to monitor the meeting. Project coordinator Dr. Leyla Tolun, assistant project coordinator Ceren Tosun and project staff responsible for the relevant work package from MAM ÇTÜE attended the meeting where the first 6 months activities and report were audited.
Information about the project is given below;
Project Name:
Marine Dredging Practices and Environmental Management of Dredging Material (TUBITAK KAMAG 1007 Project)
Project Implementer:
Ministry of Environment and Urbanization
Project executing Institutions:
MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute (Project Manager)
METU Institute of Marine Sciences
Istanbul University Institute of Marine Sciences
Purpose and scope of the project:
The overall objective of this project is to develop an approach to ensure the management of dredging and disposal activities carried out in our country in line with the principles of sustainable use without harming the ecosystem and human health, taking into account international legislation and practices. This approach, which will be supported by scientific methods, will be implemented in the marine and terrestrial environment with different characteristics in line with the specific objectives stated below and will contribute to the completion of the deficiencies of the "Draft Regulation" prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and the scientific data / information that will be needed during the implementation phase in accordance with EU principles:
To summarize the project in question:
- Analyzing, R&D studies on the criteria related to the geographical structure and marine characteristics of our country for dredging material, recovery of dredged material, discharge into the sea and disposal on land,
- Carrying out R&D studies to determine criteria for the disposal of dredging material on land and/or discharging it into the sea,
- Identification of discharge and disposal areas in the Black Sea, Marmara Sea, Aegean Sea and Mediterranean Sea with alternatives,
- Establishment of a GIS database to record dredging, dumping and disposal activities,
- Determination of principles for monitoring of discharge areas in terms of pollution load,
- Investigation and adaptation of the existing and feasible alternative methods for dredging and dumping with the least environmental impact (environmentally friendly) to the conditions of our country,
- Dredging and creation of a decision tree for sustainable management of dredged material
is intended.
