Identification of Sensitive Areas and Water Quality Targets on Basin Basis in Turkey Project

The 6th Steering Meeting within the scope of the "Project for the Identification of Sensitive Areas and Water Quality Targets on Basin Basis in Turkey" carried out by the General Directorate of Water Management of the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs and implemented by TÜBİTAK-MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute was held on March 17, 2014 at the 14th Regional Directorate of DSI in Istanbul. The meeting was attended by Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs General Directorate of Water Management, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock General Directorate of Agricultural Reform, Provincial Bank, TÜBİTAK MAM METU expert staff and consultants from ITU, Istanbul, Hacettepe and Ankara Universities.

The opening speeches of the project meeting were delivered by Dr. Selma AYAZ, Acting Director of TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE and Project Coordinator, and Dr. Yakup KARAASLAN, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Water Management. During the project meeting, Dr. Selma Ayaz presented a summary of the progress made in the project to the participants. The Sensitive and Potentially Sensitive water bodies identified in 25 basins, the methodology used in their identification, the typologies of water bodies and the monitoring points selected on Potentially Sensitive water bodies were presented. The studies carried out were explained practically for each basin. At the project meeting, consultants Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali ERTÜRK, Prof. Dr. Meriç ALBAY, Prof. Dr. Nilsun DEMİR and Prof. Dr. Nilgün KAZANCI shared their views on the project with the participants. Ideas were exchanged at the meeting and the meeting ended with various decisions for the implementation of the project in the following stages.
