Coastal areas are facing the risk of degradation as a result of increasing anthropogenic pressures, especially in the last three decades. Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) has been recommended by the European Union (EU) as an approach to ensure sustainable development of coastal areas.

The 3rd International Symposium on Integrated Coastal Zone Management (3rd ICZM), which was organized for the third time this year, was held in Antalya on October 14-17 with the participation of experts from many disciplines and from all over the world. The symposium, which was attended by participants from thirty-two countries with nearly 90 oral and poster presentations, provided the opportunity to share the efforts made in the field of ICZM from local to global.

The symposium focused on the following thematic areas;

  1. Understanding impacts on coastal ecosystem health (habitat impacts and observed changes in ecosystem functioning)
  2. Environmental Impacts: local and global pressures (anthropogenic pressures and the impact of global climate change on coastal systems)
  3. New methods and advances in assessing sustainable development (such as EU directives)
  4. Managing Our Coasts: Integrating Science and Policy
