2nd National Environment and Water Management Panel on "Hazar Lake"

TUBITAK Marmara Research Center participated in the panel organized by Elazığ Municipality on 11-12 and 13 May 2017.

Elazığ Municipality organized the 2nd National Environment and Water Management "Hazar Lake" themed panel on 11-12 and 13 May 2017. The panel was held in Culture Park Mamuratul Aziz Hall and consisted of four sessions titled "Environmental Problems", "Aquaculture", "Agriculture and Biodiversity", "Tourism and Archaeology" within the scope of Hazar Lake. The opening speeches of the panel were made by Prof. Dr. Bülent Şen, Faculty Member of Fisheries at Fırat University, Ebubekir Irmak, Mayor of Sivrice, Mustafa Temiz, District Governor of Sivrice and Mücahit Yanılmaz, Mayor of Elazığ. Officials from the Ministries of Environment and Urbanization, Forestry and Water Affairs, Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Bank of Provinces and academicians from Fırat, Akdeniz, Çukurova, Istanbul and Abant İzzet Baysal Universities participated in the panel.

In the Environmental Problems session of the panel, Dr. Selma Ayaz, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE, explained the ecological water quality model outputs made for "Lake Hazar" in the "Determination of Sensitive Areas in Turkey" project for Lake Hazar, the deepest and most natural lake in Turkey, and the measures to be taken in this context. In the model study, it was stated that even if the current situation continues, 5 meters of filter strip is drawn and 10 meters of terracing is done, the incoming load will accumulate in the lake due to the fact that the hydraulic retention period of the lake is as long as 40 years and the total phosphorus value will increase after 2025 until 2040 according to the Regulation on Surface Water Quality during the 25-year simulation period. In addition, the project outputs of the Basin Protection Action Plans -Fırat Tigris Basin and Caspian Lake Management Plan preparation project carried out by ÇTÜE in TÜBİTAK MAM were mentioned and the studies to be carried out for the protection of the lake were expressed.

The closing program under the title of Conclusion and Suggestions was completed with the speeches of Dr. Selma AYAZ, Director of TÜBİTAK MAM ÇTÜE, Recep AKDENİZ, Deputy General Director of Environmental Management of the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, Türkay ÖZGÜR, Assistant General Director of DSİ, Prof. Bülent ŞEN, Faculty Member of Fırat University Faculty of Fisheries and Mücahit YANILMAZ, Mayor of Elazığ Municipality.
