2020 TUBA-GEBIP AWARD TO TÜBİTAK MAM

Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, "TÜBA Awards" consisting of TÜBA International Academy Awards, TÜBA-GEBİP (Outstanding Young Scientist) and TÜBA-TESEP (Scientific Copyright) were presented.

Four scientists in three different categories were awarded the TÜBA International Academy Award, a total of 31 scientists, including four scientists in four different fields and four scientists in the field of polar studies, were awarded the TÜBA-GEBİP Award, and eight works were awarded the TÜBA-TESEP Award. In 2020, a total of 31 outstanding young scientists from 21 different universities and two institutions won the TÜBA-GEBİP Award, which is given annually within the scope of TÜBA's mission to encourage, appreciate and reward scientists. Thus, the number of scientists who have won the TÜBA-GEBİP Award so far has increased to 539.

This year, TÜBA GEBİP Award includes 4 outstanding young scientists from 4 different universities and institutions with scientific research, projects and studies who are the winners of the "TÜBA-GEBİP Polar Studies Award" within the scope of the "Antarctic Scientific Research and Science Base Project", which is determined by the Council as a strategic and national priority area.

In the field of TUBA GEBIP Polar Studies, Acting Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute and faculty member of Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Maritime Studies, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu ÖZSOY was awarded for her outstanding achievement.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu ÖZSOY started her polar studies career in 2005, completing her PhD in the U.S.A. with a specialization in Antarctic Sea Ice. Özsoy, who has been to the north and south poles many times, has been successfully serving as the founding director of ITU Polar Research Uyg-Ar Center, which was the first established in our country, between 2015 and 2019, and as the Acting Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute since the establishment of the Institute. He has made great contributions to the success of our work in Antarctica as the expedition coordinator, expedition leader and expedition coordinator in the development of our country's National Polar Science Program and the execution of our country's National Antarctic Science Expeditions. In the last four years, he has played an important role in over seventy scientists and researchers traveling to both Antarctica and the Arctic regions with the polar projects he has been conducting. In addition, he has made scientific contributions to open the First Polar Science House of our country in Şelale Park within the Tuzla Municipality in order to raise the young generation with polar awareness, has been instrumental in establishing polar research clubs for many student groups from primary schools to universities, and has represented the polar studies of our country in the international arena and meetings, He is a scientist who has enabled dozens of graduate students to work in the polar area, contributed to the production of the first polar documentaries of our country, contributed to many publications on polar sciences, played an important role in the creation of polar books in Turkish and in our country's gaining the memory and experience of the Polar Regions.

In addition, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kamil Boratay ALICI from TÜBİTAK Space Technologies Research Institute was awarded in the field of "Engineering Sciences" for his outstanding achievement.

All awards will be presented by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at a ceremony to be held at the Presidential Complex on a date to be determined in the coming days.
