ATHOM Project General Evaluation Meeting was held with the participation of Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Mr. Akif ÖZKALDI
The model developed with the project signed in September 2016 and executed by the TÜBİTAK MAM Energy Institute is a system that enables the prediction of the future flow to the water structures for the Seyhan Basin, which is selected as a pilot in Turkey, and accordingly, the water budgets of the storage facilities are prepared and operated on a daily, monthly and annual basis.
In this context, two types of flow forecasting models were developed. The first one forecasts the inflows of the dams in the basin for short-term (3-10 days) at hourly resolution, while the second one forecasts the dam inflows for long-term (12-15 months) at daily resolution. By using short-term flow forecasts, the basin with cascade structure is operated for flood purposes, and by using long-term flow forecasts, operating curves for energy purposes are generated. The flow forecasts and operating curves generated by the developed flow forecasting and basin optimization models are presented to the system users through a web-based application containing Geographic Information System (GIS). At the end of the project, it is aimed to control water resources for irrigation and drinking water in an optimum way with this system developed, to avoid wasting water, to operate dams in a way to maximize the production of hydraulic electricity, and to predict the risks that may occur during the flood season thanks to the automatic system to be developed. The project is expected to be completed in 2019.
In this meeting, a presentation was made for Mr. Akif Özkaldı, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, on the latest status of the ATHOM project and information was also given on the successful results obtained with the use of the results obtained by the project by DSİ. Deputy Minister Mr. Akif Özkaldı found the successful results obtained with the project very important and emphasized that the project should be applied to other basins in Turkey and should be expanded throughout the country.
