GENERAL DIRECTORATE OF MARITIME AFFAIRS VISITED TÜBİTAK MAM

Directorate General of Maritime Affairs (DGM) visited TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) on January 28, 2022. During the meeting, presentations were made on areas of cooperation.

The potential cooperation meeting was attended by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Yozgatlıgil, President of TÜBİTAK MAM, Ünal Baylan, Director General of Maritime Affairs, Erol Ekmekçi, Kocaeli Port President, Prof. Dr. Burcu Özsoy, Vice President of TÜBİTAK MAM and Director of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute (KARE), Özer Özbey, Head of Training and Certification Department of DGM, Assoc. Prof. Haldun Karan from TÜBİTAK MAM Air Quality Management Group, Kpt. Doğaç Baybars Işıler and Kpt. Eng. Eng. Sinan Yirmibeşoğlu, Chief Researcher Aslı Süha Günay from TÜBİTAK MAM Marine and Inland Waters Group, DGM Maritime Survey Engineers Tolga Sanal and Esat Güzel.

At the meeting where potential areas of cooperation between the two institutions were discussed, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Haldun Karan from TÜBİTAK MAM Air Quality Management Group presented the "Feasibility Project for the Development of Maritime Education". In the project, it was agreed to prioritize 4 main work packages;

  1. Identification of shipboard training needs, especially training ship and virtual training ship,
  2. Conducting feasibility studies for the establishment of a pilot pilot model ship supported training center,
  3. Conducting a feasibility study for the establishment of a "Safety at Sea Training Center" consisting of "Fire Training" and "Survival at Sea Training" units where theoretical knowledge will be transformed into practice,
  4. It is aimed to realize the feasibility study of a mobile "Maritime Education Unit" in order to ensure interest and love for maritime at a young age.

TÜBİTAK MAM KARE Kpt. Doğaç Baybars Işıler made presentations on "TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research", which included information on the fields of work and activities of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute. In the following periods, the potential for new collaborations was revealed by exchanging ideas in different areas such as ship operations in logistics processes in both the Arctic Ocean and the Southern Ocean, ship trainings for polar researchers, and the production and operation of ice class ships in our country in the polar research studies of our country.

Subsequently, a presentation was made by Aslı Süha Günay, Principal Researcher, on the activities and projects carried out by TÜBİTAK MAM within the scope of maritime activities. In the presentation, chronological information was given about the projects initiated in 2006 with the Republic of Turkey Prime Ministry Undersecretariat of Maritime Affairs (Abrogated) and then jointly carried out with the General Directorate of Shipyards and Coastal Structures (Abrogated) and the General Directorate of Maritime and Inland Waterways Regulation (Abrogated) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

These projects are briefly as follows;

  • Control and Management of Harmful Aquatic Organisms Carried by Ballast Water Project
  • Establishment of Emergency Response Centers and Determination of the Current Situation in Various Centers Project (Assistance Search and Rescue and Emergency Response Automation System (YAKAMOS) was developed and National Emergency Response and Maritime Safety Center (UDEM) was designed).
  • Ballast Water Risk Assessment Software Project
  • Feasibility Study for the Development of Current and Pollutant Dispersion Model System for Turkish Seas
