I. National Marine Monitoring and Assessment Symposium

Within the scope of the "Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Project 2014-2016", which is owned by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and carried out by TÜBİTAK-Marmara Research Center (TÜBİTAK MAM), Environment and Cleaner Production Institute, the I. National Marine Monitoring and Assessment Symposium was held in Ankara on 21-23 December 2016. The aim of this symposium, which is planned to be continued in the following years, is to share and disseminate the results obtained from marine monitoring and assessment activities carried out with the regular support of the Ministry with a wider audience within a scientific event and to create a national platform where they can be evaluated together with other scientific findings and recommendations that can support these studies.

"Integrated Marine Pollution Monitoring Project" was carried out in collaboration with METU Institute of Marine Sciences, IU Institute of Marine Sciences and Management and IU Faculty of Fisheries, Ege University Faculty of Fisheries, Sinop University Faculty of Fisheries and Department of Biology, Celal Bayar University Department of Biology and Karadeniz Technical University Faculty of Marine Sciences, together with TÜBİTAK MAM research infrastructure and marine researchers.

In the symposium, 49 papers and 18 posters, including innovative topics such as monitoring with satellites, buoys and genetic methods under the sub-components of eutrophication, biodiversity and food webs, hydrographic changes, pollutants, marine litter and marine monitoring policies, were presented in 8 separate sessions in one hall. On the last day of the symposium, an evaluation session with the participation of the session chairs and a panel discussion on the results of the symposium and marine monitoring and research policies were organized.

The Symposium book, which will include the proceedings of the symposium, will be published in February 2017 and the symposium final declaration will also be included in the same book. Declaration The results of the symposium are grouped under 7 main headings. These are

  1. The value of our seas and their desired environmental status,
  2. Increasing data and information about our seas,
  3. Supporting new projects and monitoring and evaluation activities,
  4. Transition from projects to programs, ensuring coordination between projects and programs,
  5.  Overcoming barriers and increasing the number and quality of partnerships and collaborations,
  6.  Establishment of a National Marine Environment Database and ensuring data assurance,
  7.  Establishing a multi-stakeholder and coordinated "Marmara Sea Protection Action Plan".
