EU MISIS Project - ''MSFD Guiding Improvements in the Black Sea Integrated Monitoring System''
TÜBİTAK MAM Environment and Cleaner Production Institute was the subcontractor of the EU MISIS "Improvements in the Black Sea Integrated Monitoring System Guided by the WFD" project meeting which took place between 10-12 December 2013 in the A2 hall of the Energy Institute.
The project "MSFD Guiding Improvements in the Black Sea Integrated Monitoring System (MISIS)", supported by the European Union's (EU) Directorate-General for Environment (EC DG ENV), aims to contribute to the extension of marine environmental monitoring in Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey in the context of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and to the establishment of a unified, regular and continuous monitoring program for the Black Sea.
The project also aims to support efforts to protect and restore the environmental quality and sustainability of the Black Sea. In this context, it is aimed to improve the availability and quality of chemical and biological data (in line with Annex 1 and Annex 3 of the WFD), increase the number and size of protected areas in the Black Sea and raise their level of protection, increase stakeholder involvement and public awareness on environmental issues in order to ensure an integrated assessment of the environmental status of the Black Sea (including pressures and impacts).
Within the scope of the Project, a marine collaborative study was carried out between 22-31 July 2013 with the participation of the Project partners on board the R/V Akademik of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - Institute of Oceanography. In the study, investigations on water column and seabed habitats, pollutants in sediments and biota, eutrophication and marine solid wastes and inter-laboratory comparison studies were carried out as specified in the WFD. Final evaluation reports of these studies are being prepared.
The meeting was held on December 10-12, 2013 and was attended by the project partners from Romania, National Institute for Marine Research and Development ''Grigore Antipa'', National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology and ''Ovidius'' A total of 30 people, including researchers from Constanta University, Institute of Oceanology from Bulgaria, Bulgarian Academy of Science and Sinop University Faculty of Fisheries, as well as academicians from other universities in Turkey, participated in the project.
The participating countries shared information on the work carried out in the Black Sea under the Marine Framework Strategy Directive on national classification systems, eutrophication and pollutants in order to define "good environmental status" and set targets.
