Within the scope of “Kocaeli Sustainable Environmental Action Plan” studies, Kocaeli Environmental Council Meeting was held on November 02, 2021 at Kocaeli Congress Center. After the opening remarks and presentations of Kocaeli Governor Seddar Yavuz and Metropolitan Kocaeli Mayor Assoc. Prof. Tahir Büyükakın, workshop focus group meetings were held on 13 topics (climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, local transportation, urban green areas for sustainable land use, nature and biodiversity, air quality, environmental noise and vibration quality, waste generation and management, water and wastewater management, eco-innovation and sustainable business, energy performance, integrated environmental management and Izmit Bay). The "İzmit Bay" session, participated by many Institutions and Organizations, was moderated by TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Environment and Cleaner Production Institute Director Dr. Selma Ayaz.
The participants were briefed on Izmit Bay and the pressures on it, and were asked questions about eutrophication, biodiversity, maritime activities and hazardous materials. Past experiences of all stakeholders, current situation of Izmit Bay, future plans and examples of good practice were discussed.
