Who We Are
Our country's relationship with the Polar regions started in the 16th century with the drawing of the South American coasts closest to Antarctica on the world map of Piri Reis. In the historical process, scientific studies have continued actively under the flags of other countries and/or joint expeditions with other countries.
Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye, with the support and financing of the Ministry of Industry and Technology and under the coordination of ITU PolReC, national scientific expeditions were organized to the Antarctic continent in 2017, 2018 and 2019.
In 2019, the Polar Research Institute (KARE) was established within TÜBİTAK MAM and polar studies continue under TÜBİTAK MAM KARE.
KARE aims to support R&D and scientific research that can be applied in polar regions, to carry out National Polar Expeditions, to operate polar camps and base(s) belonging to our country, to plan and coordinate logistics, to ensure inter-institutional communication, to maintain international bilateral cooperation, to develop and execute the national polar strategy by opening it to stakeholders, to create awareness of polar regions on a national scale, to provide national and international science diplomacy specific to polar regions, and to increase our country's competitiveness and scientific power by representing our country in international arenas.

Mission
To carry out studies on the Polar regions (Antarctic and Arctic and Ocean areas) covering all institutions of our country, to increase the visibility of our country in international platforms, to carry out awareness and educational activities for climate change, to add value in the fields of deep sea and polar geopolitics and law.
Vision
To work for our country to have a say in the polar regions (Antarctic and Arctic and Oceanic areas), to increase its visibility, to act as an interface for science, research, law, industry and technology development studies, and to carry out climate change awareness and education activities.

Our Management Policy
Polar Research Institute, for the Polar Regions; within the framework of TÜBİTAK MAM's Management Policy;
- To carry out studies in accordance with national and international standards by using domestic and national products, equipment and technologies in the maximum way with innovative perspectives
- Establishing an institutional memory for the polar regions and becoming a coordination center for scientific studies
- To continue to be a pioneer, leader in polar studies and a recognized institution in national and international platforms.
