After the 6.6 magnitude earthquake striking the Aegean Sea off Seferihisar-İzmir on 30 October 2020, a team from TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center Earth and Marine Sciences Institute arrived upon the stricken zone.
As part of the Post-Earthquake Emergency Observation Studies (DEPAR) Project, the team rapidly started its operations in the zone. Aftershocks of large magnitude earthquakes provide very important data for the investigation of seismicity in active fault zones and seismic risks of settlements.
If this precious data is not collected immediately by establishing on-site stations in the aftermath of large earthquakes, the scientists would need to wait for the next large earthquake again.
In order to get the data instantaneously, TÜBİTAK MAM research specialists started to collect data at the earthquake zone through their technical equipment right after the earthquake.
